The Shadowlands (mystical adventure)

These novels are fairly self-contained, so they don't have to be read in order. You could start with Escape From the Shadowlands, In Search of Destiny, or The Gift.

  1. The Lost Treasure of Roth Nagor (historical prequel): Set in the Shadowlands, a degenerative realm, young David Seymour goes in search of the Lost Treasure of Roth Nagor, and finds a still greater prize.

  2. Life on the Flipside of In Two Minds (prequel): Bradley Foster is convicted of a crime that he did not commit and is 'sent down' for life to the degenerative realm of the Shadowlands, where he leads an impoverished and troubled life. Fortunately, he finds love and also the help of The Network, a clandestine organization run by a mystic from the mountainous realm of Narayana.

  3. Escape From the Shadowlands: Something has gone drastically wrong with Psi, the caretaker system, and the effects are even being felt in the higher planes. The experiment in the Shadowlands, formerly the Eden Project, is to be terminated, imperilling the six billion souls down there, as well as the representatives and resident field workers. Marie and her younger brother foolishly decide to make the descent, in order to help out, but their plans go awry and they become separated from one-another, and they forget their origins. Fortunately, they eventually find help in the form of the writer and spiritual Master Tenzing Jangbu Rinchen and his clandestine organization, The Network.

  4. In Search of Destiny: is set in the disparate realms of the Outlands; Sher Point, the metropolis of the Freelands, and the mystical kingdom of Narayana in the East. It tells the story of Conrad Harper, who sets out one day to search for his destiny and heart's true desire; of the help offered him by a mysterious organization known simply as the Network; his journeys with the Master of the Tradition, Tenzing Jangbu Rinchen, and of his finding romance, ancient knowledge, unfettered awareness and wholeness of being. And it shows how ordinary and everyday experiences, which we tend to take for granted and often do not value, can be brought into service and woven together into a rich tapestry with an altogether higher purpose.

  5. The Lucian Uprising: Things were bad enough with the economic depression and the growing poverty. Then they were further inflamed by the rise to power of a new political party with an age-old agenda, led by the charismatic despot Lucian. This is the heart-rending story of friends caught up in those upheavals, and of help they receive from a clandestine, mystical organization simply known as The Network.

  6. Time and Time Again: tells the story of difficult decisions and hard times for the common people with the rise of a violent movement of religious fanatics, the Hujardi, sweeping through the land of Gilgamar.

  7. The Gift: tells the moving story of Emily Hart and Bradley Frogmorton as they awaken to the Gift and answer the summons of the Doyen Mugwash … and what comes after. If you have 'the Gift', whatever you do, keep the secret to yourself. “You're beginning a whole new life – and for your own good and for the good of your future employers, it is better that you leave your old attachments behind. The more completely you make this transition, the better. 'To serve and gladly' is our motto, and the very essence of our activity. This should be your only concern from now on. It is a great honour to be called to enter the ranks of the Ancient and Noble Order of the Mugwash, and vitally important that you understand, appreciate and above all wholeheartedly embrace this ethos; and develop and nourish the precious Gift that makes all this possible. Don't let us down.” ~ The Noble and Most Reverend Mater Mugwash. The Gift is a short novel, circa 42,000 words.

  8. The Host and the Guests: tells the story of a mysterious illness which takes hold in Ingmar and of the struggle of one of the sufferers to free herself from its clutches, with a little help from her friends in the Network, a clandestine organization run by the writer and mystic, Tenzing Jangbu Rinchen.

  9. Whisperings of Love: The wise healer Mair Freida is ill and her friends must embark on a long journey to bring back a cure. The old lady at length hears the whisperings of love, calling to her. It is time to move on from the hidden mountain sanctuary of babs chu to join the Elder Abbots on the next stage in her continuing evolution in the still more distant mystical realm of Shu'la beland. But is Mair Freida strong enough to make that journey? And with a deranged killer on the loose, will he thwart the Network's plans and gain access to Shu'la beland?

  10. The Insiders: Exploring the higher realms of possibility: John Little is intrigued by a friend's illicit involvement in the old ways, which date back to a time long before the rise of the New Faith. Sent on a journey to find the Teacher of the Age, he learns from a number of diverse Masters along the way. The Insiders is a response to The Teachers of Gurdjieff by Rafael Lefort. “In answer to your many as yet unasked questions, know-what is ten a penny and often not worth the paper it's printed on. I'm here to teach you know-how and that is an altogether different kettle of fish.” ~ The Master Malik Joujai. The Insiders is a short novel, circa 38,000 words.

Social realism

  1. Thank You, I Understand: is a factional work takes the reader on an evolutionary journey of self-rediscovery from near Neanderthal to sentient human being in a thousand and one fraught lessons.

A psychological drama, it explores the murky depths of the unregenerate psyche, trials and redemption; passionate romance; the wise voice of inner-tuition, and the heightened awareness of eventual spiritual reawakening. An awakening into a strange world pregnant with deep meaning in which we see revealed an awe-inspiring hidden design at work amidst the everyday life which we mistakenly take to be the real world.

Rocky Rhodes is one wave short of a shipwreck as the story begins, going through a period of teenage rebellion, amidst a subculture of sex, drugs and rock and roll, and later he experiences psychosis and schizophrenia. But his life begins to take on new direction when he is introduced to the way of the Sufi mystics.

For children and the young at heart

  1. DreamScape: In the Beginning: Horrified at the impending plan to terminate the failed Experiment down at Sher Point, which would result in a huge loss of innocent life, young Ellie steals into her father's den and uses his latest gizmo, DreamScape, to descend from Zone Five to Sher Point and try to save the people there.

Unfortunately, once immersed in the lower world, Ellie suffers amnesia and, as her parents cannot be traced, she is sent to the SunnyDene Home for Wayward Children. Upstairs in Zone Five, the race is on to trace and rescue Ellie.

But there is another grave problem facing them. The plans for DreamScape have been stolen by the Dark Forces. At first the people of Sher Point are delighted to be able to act out their most cherished or wildest dreams, but what they don't know is that the system has been modified to enslave their minds. Can the people be saved before the Dread Lord Develin makes his triumphal return?

DreamScape: In the Beginning is a spiritually-inspired fantasy adventure, suitable for teenagers and adults alike. It is a prequel to the treasure hunt Ellie and the Elvenstone.

This story was originally written as a prototype and later evolved into the novel Escape From the Shadowlands, part of the Shadowlands series of books by the same author.

  2. Ellie and the Elvenstone: is a spiritually-inspired, action-packed fantasy adventure with treasure hunt clues, suitable for the young and the young at heart.

Though it is a sequel to DreamScape: In the Beginning, you don't have to read any of the other books first.

Books by H.M. Forester

Soft sci-fi

  1. The Dissidents: A novella: Enforcement Officer Kingsley is pretty sure of himself and the Greater Good that the Hive stands for, and he shows no compunction when rooting out the dissidents and having them banged to rights.

But all that changes when he meets Holly Potter, a dissident informant, and he is assigned to work undercover with her, in order to penetrate to the very heart of the dissident movement. What they experience and learn comes at a terrible personal price.

The Dissidents (edition 6) by H.M. Forester is a dystopian, soft sci-fi novella of approximately 46,000 words. It is more about people than technology, so you don't need a degree in quantum physics to read it.

  2. Game of Aeons: A short novel: Young Robin Hargreaves is looking for something to occupy his time and spice up his life. Apparently by chance, whilst perusing the wares in a second-hand shop, he is introduced to Game of Aeons, a computer simulation.

In the game, he meets up with a young lady, Ellie, who takes him under her wing. Despite her youth, Ellie has risen to the ranks of a veteran in the game and as well as a loving heart, she has a wise head on her shoulders.

Robin soon discovers that like life itself, Games of Aeons is not all beer and skittles. As he becomes more and more involved and immersed in the game, it becomes increasingly real and at times frightening. But by the time he realizes this, it is too late to back out and there is too much at stake – not only in-game but also in what we commonly and mistakenly think of as the Real World.

Game of Aeons is a short, 60,000-word novel in the genre of soft science fiction. Like the in-story game of the same name, the book is more about people rather than technology, so you don’t need a degree in quantum physics to understand and enjoy it. Nor is it a shoot ’em up, so you don’t need an interest in computer gaming.

Psi-fi

  1. Secret Friends: The Ramblings of a Madman in Search of a Soul:The writer and thinker Idries Shah laid out his contemporary, Western projection of the Sufi Way in a great many books over the years, and Secret Friends draws, in part, on the inner experiences of Robert Llewelyn George in his faltering attempts to follow that mystical path. The intrepid psychonaut, Carl Gustav Jung also documents his own inner travels in his Red Book, and later in his published journals, the Black Books. This, then, you might call Louie’s Little Green Book.

  2. The Scent of Reality and other short stories: A number of people find themselves at a strange and unexpected meeting in the back room of an English pub with an elderly lady, Gladys Merrywether, and tell their stories about why they are there and what led them there.

The shrewd lady opens their eyes to all manner of possibilities – some of which are welcome, and some decidedly not.

  3. The Imaginal Veil: Alex, a young adult finds employment and, after attending a lecture on the Imaginal World by Professor Sheila Trelawney, he joins one of the groups run by the Cross-Cultural Studies Institute, the Silver Circle, and he transitions from an interest in theory to practical pursuits.

Here, then, is Alex's story, the story of the group, and about them getting a little more than they bargained for, in their work.

  4. Beyond a Shadow of a Doubt (psi-fi story only): A crash course in psi-fi, Romantic idealism, depth psychology, the daemonic, and Resistance, or “Making a Lasting Impression”. This edition contains only the sci-fi story of resistance, not the additional study materials.

Poetry

  1. Heart to Heart: A short selection of early poetry (sadly all the black-and-white drawings have been lost).

  2. Secret Friends: A Collection of Poems: A collection of poetry exploring metaphysical, spiritual, and psychological themes.
